How to have an Eco-Friendly Autumn

1. Clothes

It can be all too easy to buy new clothes for the new season but even sustainable fashion items come with a cost to the environment, especially if you don't actually need any new items.  First of all head to your wardrobe and see what you already have.
  • Get out your sewing machine and re-purpose existing clothes into new ones.
  • Make your own clothes - learn to knot, sew or crochet.
  • Get together with a group of friends and have a clothes swap party.
  • If you do need new clothes then buy "new to you" from second hand stores and online.
  • If buying totally new go for quality clothes made from natural materials in a timeless style that will last the test of time.
  • If you have clothes you really don't want and can't give to friends downgrade them to something else such as cleaning cloths. T-Shirt bags or use them in the garden to protect plants.  This post has 7 ideas to keep clothes out of landfill.

Simple and Sustainable Ways to enjoy Halloween

I am the first to admit I love Halloween.  I am a dab hand at making costumes so long as they are ghosts or zombies (!) and I take great delight in making frightful looking food that actually tastes really nice.  However what I do not like about Halloween is twofold and they are linked.  I do not like the rise in its commercialism and I do not like Trick or Treating.  For me I love a simple and sustainable Halloween.

Week 25 - A Spooky and Green Halloween

I am the first to admit I love Halloween but not the overtly commercial Halloween that has appeared in the UK over the last few years.  For me (and the boys) it's all about the ghoulish food, the dressing up and the not having to dust away the cobwebs in the weeks preceding Halloween!  It is NOT about heading to the shops to buy stuff  from the shelves that bear ever increasing amounts of plastic Halloween merchandise that we actually do not need.  Here then are the 7 ways I have a Spooky and GREEN Halloween.
