Animal Tales - 8

 Posted by Rosie

Welcome to Animal Tales, the blog linky that brings together all sorts of animal blog posts.  It runs from Tuesday morning thought to Friday night and showcases a wide range of animal related posts.

Harry is doing well with his "not chasing poultry" lessons but does still find the cats a bit of a challenge, especially when they run off in front of him. We have also realised that there are a few things we really hope Saari does not teach him:

1. To bark - she is a bit of a woofer where-as Poppy was pretty silent.  Harry, at the moment, is somewhere in between.
2. To be scared of:
  • the hoover
  • strangers
  • the vet
  • the butcher
  • ladies in yellow coats
  • in fact pretty much everything!
3.  To hammer at the door to come in - Harry appears to be much more patient.
4.  To steal food
5.  To chase wildlife (except if it is a fox or other chicken eating predator that is on the smallholding)
6.  To eat vile dead things
7.  To roll in badger/fox/cow/sheep poo
8.  To jump the gate - FAIL.  He has already learnt this from her and here she is giving him his first lesson!

Gate jumping lessons.

Thank you to everyone who joined in the linky last week - it was great to see new people linking up with their animal tales so we had an interesting variety of posts from the smallest of small mice to the much larger Highland cattle.  I wonder what we'll get this week?

Feel free to come and add your animal related posts to the linky below.  The posts can be old or new and as varied as the animals who we share our world with.   There's a Pinterest Board with pictures from all the linked blogs which you can see here and if you tweet with the hashtag #AnimalTales I'll retweet you.  Just give me a nudge if I appear to have forgotten you.

Full details of the linky can be found here and once again can I remind people to comment on a few of the others who link up.  It's only polite and keeps the thing working!

  1. Our dogs have certainly learnt each others bad habits, but then again they did grow up together. Still it seems like they become more and more like each other every day. I certainly hope that Harry manages to teach a few good habits to Saari along the way.

    1. So do I but I suspect there may be more bad than good habit learnt!

  2. Me thinks you need a taller gate. Our cats don't seem to pick up much from each other, although sometimes our bigger, heavier cat tries to copy jumping on our shoulders and it really doesn't work. Hope you succeed in keeping away the bad habits.

    1. In an ideal world, yes,Erica but then Saari would just jump the fences and there are too many of those to raise. In fairness she does only go into the field so let's hope that all what she teaches Harry.

  4. I usually (but only due to space and time constraints!) only have one dog at a time but I once looked after another Labrador for 6 weeks while her owner was away. Stella taught Lindy about climbing stairs and Lindy taught Stella about digging up the garden! They would play together and sleep together but never wanted to walk together. I got a lot of exercise in those 6 weeks! So glad Harry is doing so well already :)

    1. Shhhhh - don't mention digging. That bad trait does seem to have passed both ours by at the moment.

  5. I'm linking and running for now (supposed to be working, really need to get my arse into gear with that) but will be back over the next few days to read all these lovely posts. Your post about Saari teaching Harry is really interesting. We are debating whether we should get another while we've still got Pluto to make the second dog easier to train with Plu's help... as you'll see from my post, we're not sure this is a good idea ;)

    1. I think it would be a good idea. We thought about getting another dog before Poppy died but as we had no idea how long she would live after the cancer diagnosis and 3 BIG dogs (plus the ones we dog sit) for any length of time would have been too much. I would always say get another dog if you have the space. Seeing Saari getting on better with Harry day by day is such a lovely thing.

  6. Dogs learn from one another for sure. I hope that Harry doesn't pick up any of the habits you don't want him to. We have five dogs and between them they have picked up all the bad doggy habits you mention...Except none can hurdle a fence (that we know of) and not only do they roll in sheep poo a couple of them are rather partial to eating it too!....Really not nice!
