August in the Veg Patch

Posted by Rosie

After a slow start with things back in the Spring (lovely warm days but cold nights), produce is finally coming in thick and fast from the both polytunnel and the veg garden here at Eco-Gites of Lenault.  I have grown possibly my best ever cabbages and lettuces, beans and chard are doing really well and I am picking trug-loads of tomatoes, courgettes and a good few peppers and aubergines.

Prize winning cabbage?

First climbing French beans

Lots of lettuces

I have also now been digging up the potatoes. A few are blighted, some are slug attacked but overall the harvest we have so far is very respectable.  Thank you Tom and Ben for helping, although I do vaguely remember some bribery involved to get you out digging!

The boys digging potatoes - thanks lads!

Rain earlier in the summer probably was responsible for the blight but now a spell of dry and often hot weather has not been helping things.  Once the potatoes are cleared I like to fill the land with some late summer and winter crops, namely lettuce, leeks, cabbages and cauliflowers.  Seedlings were bought at the market and the weather forecast looked at.  No rain.  However last night I was woken to the sound of good heavy rain, the sort that really soaks into the soil and helps turn a slightly parched looking veg patch into something much more healthy and verdant.  Phew!  Hopefully now the seedlings will not only survive but thrive.

Everything grateful for a night of rain

Eco-Gites of Lenault Veg Patch and Polytunnel - Aug 2014

Are you a vegetable grower?  If so how are things coming along?  I'd love to hear from you.

I'm linking up once again with Annie from Manneskjur and the How Does Your Garden Grow linky.  Do pop over and see what other gardeners have been up to this week.

  1. Wow, that is an impressive looking cabbage!! Your whole plot is looking fantastic. We are in need of some proper rain too, I think my veggies would really appreciate it. I love coming to your blog, it really inspires me with what I could grow in my own patch.

  2. It is so rewarding when you go and harvest vegetables that you have lovingly grown. Your cabbages look great, unfortunately the slugs got ours so the chickens had a feast x #HDYGG

  5. It's all looking magnificent Rosie! That cabbage is a beaut. We've had some random nightime rain here too this week and Im convinced that's been what's finally ripened the tomatoes.
If only I had room for a polytunnel! Thank you for joining in and sharing again x

    1. Hopefully you'll have a bumper tomato harvest now. I can't grown them outside as there is too much blight so I am ever grateful for my plastic friend!
