A Normandy Garden - 4 seasons in one day

Today's garden pictures are from a cottage in Lenault which belongs to friends and where Simon and I have been working today.  We were busy chipping branches that had been cut from overgrown trees and as I dragged them to Simon and the chipper I was amazed to see how much colour was still in the garden was and how each season seemed to be present.

Summer was there in these geraniums still in flower and still putting our new leaves and buds:

For autumn a whole wall of hydrangeas was there to cheer my aching limbs (who knew how heavy tree branches can get after a few hours!) ...

Winter would not be winter without holly, although sadly this one did not have any berries:

Oh and logs for a winter fire:

And with the amazingly mild weather we are still having (14ÂșC yesterday) some spring flowers are a bit ahead of themselves:

Greater Perwinkle - Vinca major

Elephant Ears - Bergenia

Primroses - Primula spp

How is your garden growing - how many seasons can you find out there?  As many as we have here in Normandy?

  1. Astonishing how warm it still is. 14C in Worthing today - madness! I thought onset of winter was going to come not long after our visit to you. Still waiting!

    1. So did I yet, like you say we are still waiting. I need frost to kill the pests.

  3. The garden along the road from us has daffodils and primula in flower. Our bulbs aren't out yet but I do wonder if they'll make it to spring!

    1. We have lots of bulb leaves up too. I am glad now I planted some bulbs really late as they are not yet showing.

  4. Good to see some hydrangeas - they are one of my favourite plants! The weather has been very mild here too. We have Spring bulbs popping up and quite a few flowers in the front garden. I don't think you'll be needing many logs for your fire ;)

    1. A couple of times we have lit the fire and then had to let it out as we got too warm. I fear we may pay for this next year though ...

  5. Daffodils are almost up here in my mums garden in Hereford and blossom on the trees. Wednesday morning 7.30am French time it was 17°c. Not right! Walked around town today and people in t-shirts.

  6. It's just so bizarre at the moment with the weather. From your photos you would think it was spring not winter.

  8. Oh so much prettiness! Totally fueling my hydrangea love there too (thank you!) It's pretty mild here too, wet but mild and the RHS is reporting some of their fruit trees are in blossom already - with much debate about what this means for next year. We shall see. In the meantime I'll be sat here looking at your friends garden happily!

    Merry Christmas lovely x
