Winter Garden

Posted by Rosie

In between torrential rain last Thursday and Friday, heavy rain on Saturday and Sunday, frost and then snow on Wednesday I have not really been able to get much done in the garden this week.  I did spread some more manure between the rain and frost spells but that was about it for work.

Did I mention snow?

No digging today

Despite being pretty much ignored though, the veg garden here at Eco-Gites of Lenault  is still providing us with plenty of fresh veg.  This is what I harvested a few days ago before we had the snow:

Winter vegetable harvest

In the trug there was (clockwise from top left) a savoy cabbage, cavolo nero, leeks, parsnips, brussel sprouts and curly kale.

The leeks and the curly kale went in a stir fry.
We had the cavolo nero pan-fried with chorizo and onion.
The cabbage and brussels went with a mutton stew.
... and I am still deciding what to do with the parsnips.

Not bad for mid January. We also have plenty of summer veg frozen, some bottled tomato sauce (although this is almost finished) and pumpkins and potatoes in store.

Winter vegetables

Is your veg patch still producing veg or are you waiting to start again this spring?  Maybe someone on Annie's How Does Your garden Grow linky will also have been harvesting veg this week.

  1. How lovely to still be reaping the rewards of your home grown veg, despite the winter elements :)

  2. Wow, look at all that snow! Haven't even had a dusting here. Honey roasted parsnips are my favourite way to eat snips! Glad to hear your veg patch is still giving you lots of tasty things even though you haven't had a chance to get out there :)

    1. We had them simply roasted with some turkey mince in the end. Very tasty.

  3. We're not getting a thing from ours at the moment, so looking at this with admiration. Also just a little bit envious of the snow.

    1. I am pretty pleased with what we are still getting .... and interspersed with frozen summer veg we do have a good variety of home grown stuff to eat.

  6. You've had the dreaded snow! I've been wading through it again for the past two days. We usually roast parsnips with potatoes. I know some people use them in cakes similiar to carrot cake. I would think of cake though!

    1. Luckily the snow has now gone - not my favourite weather at all! In the end we ate the parsnips simply roasted with some turkey mince. Yum!

  7. I can't believe you still are harvesting things. Well actually I can but only because I know you are the single most organised person I have ever met (virtually or otherwise!)
Snow! Blimey! I do love the look of the runner bean sticks standing up in the snow, so picturesque.
I do hope you have warm socks....

Much love and thanks for joining in again :) x

  8. We have two celeriac left on the allotment and nothing else - slim pickings compared to yours! The Spring Greens will be ready soon though and this year I'm determined to get more Winter veg planted. Your garden looks beautiful in the snow :)

    1. I have never managed to successfully grow celeriac. Maybe that should be one of my goals for 2015.

    1. Thank you, Kriss - we try to grow all our own veggies and reckon we only buy about 15% of what we eat over a year.

  10. I only have eggplants and they are gone so I am making new ones. I really dont know when I can start again as I only have pots. But I am seeing lots of seeds in stores so I guess that this is the right time.

Your harvest are amazing. They looks so healthy!

    1. Probably still a bit early - people with heated greenhouses do start things in January not otherwise you'll need to wait until the risk of frost is gone.
