From the garden ....

Posted by Rosie

As we near the Winter Solstice, the veg garden looks rather bare and weather-beaten, but it is still producing a surprising number of vegetables:

Celeriac, carrots, cabbage, parsnips, leeks, swede, curly kale, parsley, brussels, turnips, chard, leaf beet, very tiny late beetroots and lettuce, mesclun and chillies from the polytunnel. There are also potatoes and pumpkins in store.

Some of these will run out soon but hopefully there will be some produce for a few more months. There is always that difficult period in spring when the winter veg has finished but the summer stuff hasn't started but I hope that this year the polytunnel will help bridge that gap. I also have lots of healthy looking purple sprouting broccoli and spring cabbages and a fair number of bags of beans and vegetable based meals in the freezer. What a long time ago that courgette glut seems to be now!

The chickens are also still earning their keep. Admittedly we have only had 2 eggs today but yesterday and the day before there were 6 eggs each day. That from 10 birds of which 3 have only just come into lay is, I think, a good number. Thanks girls.
