Eco Loo

This old (1937) compost toilet has had a make over and has now been bought into the 21st Century. With so many people visiting and only one toilet, things were sometimes getting a little tricky , especially in the mornings. So action was needed and we decided the quickest course was to put this old shack back into use.

The image is not the best but gives the general idea. I built the new toilet and upgraded it to even include a proper seat. There is a section on the right to put the compost, soil or woodchips (or a mix) etc to sprinkle over your 'doings' . I need to vanish the wood before filling it, hence the temporary use of a storage box. And the barrel serves a very vital role - it props up the loo seat lid (slight design flaw). After a suitable period of time the toilet is emptied and the mixture is returned to the soil. How green is that?

This is only a temporary compost toilet as the shack is in what will be our front garden but it will be a good experiment and help us develop our future compost toilets

  1. Love it! I'm slowly convincing My Dear Wife that we should do this. We have an old composting loo joined to the house that is unused and I would like to get it back in service. It has to be better than the fosse, and the fosse is better than the mains.

  2. Dear Wife of Jon in France - "You need the compost loo." It's great to know you can "go" and not have to pay out for water to flush PLUS you get some excellent manure in a couple of years time!
