This is my blog, A Green and Rosie Life, which is all about helping you live life that bit greener without having to build an off-grid log cabin in the woods or knit your own nettle fibre undies! It's about helping you make simple changes that together will make a big difference to our beautiful world and make it a better place for our children.

Camera Skills - January 17th 2016
As I mentioned on Thursday I am not good at sticking to New Year Resolutions so I tend not to set any. However I have set myself a goal for 2016 (which is different) and that is a goal to improve my photography skills. I have a pretty good (if slightly old) digital SLR camera with all the knobs and buttons you would expect but I don't really use them, relying on point and shoot and sometimes getting the image I want! So I have bought myself this photography book and plan to find out how to get the photos I want by using those knobs and buttons rather than relying on chancet. Once I have worked out what I am doing I might even treat myself to a new camera with better macro and zoom.
Have you got any tips for me to improve my photography?
Ooo I look forward to seeing what tips and techniques you pick up
ReplyDeleteThank you for linking up
Me too as I really would like a new camera with better zoom and macro :)
DeleteI've become a point and shoot photographer because I'm lazy and it's so easy but back in the days when you had to do it yourself I did actually know what to do, it's just that I've forgotten! I often think I should refresh my memory but somehow it never happens. Good luck with your project.
ReplyDeleteThank you - I just feel that if I am to spend out on a new camera I really shoud make proper use of it ... and too often my point and shoot method fails me LOL
Deletego you Rosie, my biggest tip is to read it then try it for yourself, don't try and read it all and remember it all, but be warned, capturing the moment with animals you will probably end up back in point and shoot mode!
ReplyDeleteHa ha, I know what you're saying about animals. I have a shot of one of our piglets running in wet grass which I love and I literally just turned round and snapped. It will never win any competitions but it means a lot to me.
DeleteWishing you the best of luck!
ReplyDeleteMerci :)
DeleteThe rule of thirds for composition, aperture priority, editing and use of light and shade are four areas I concentrated on when I first got my DSLR and found my technique and photos improved - and another - take lots, keep what you like discard the rest. Looking forward to watching your progress.
ReplyDeleteThanks Ian. I am going to work on aperture I think first :)
DeleteCheck out Snowing indoors blog for some simple to follow photography basics. But also sign up to Emma Davis' photography 'A year of my camera'. There's a facebook group (don't get scared of some of the amazing photographers in there, and free weekly newsletters with challenges and tips. She's all about photography for bloggers, is lovely, and everything's really easy to understand.
ReplyDeleteBrilliant tips, Emma and thank you. Off to look at your suggestions now.
DeleteGO FOR IT! :-D
ReplyDeleteI can see you're going to have a lot of fun with your camera over the next few months!
Thanks Steph - at least I no longer have to send the film off only to find a week later the photos were all awful LOL (showing my age here!).
DeleteOh good luck with it, I really need to invest in a decent one, but great idea to ask in this link up. I'm the same with new year resolutions but set myself goals too ha! X
ReplyDeleteYes, goals are definitely not new Year Resolutions!
Deletegreat idea. i hate resolutions too (so easily forgotten) but goals are fabulous!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Sherry.
DeleteHi Rosie, this looks like the type of book I need too! One moment I have a 'lightbulb' moment and think I understand something, then the next the bulb dies!
ReplyDeleteI look forward to seeing your pictures.
xx
Yes, I know that feeling.
DeleteI'm doing the A Year With My Camera photography workshop with Emma, not to late to join, there's only been one assignment so far :) It really is starting at the basics which is good for me...I can edit things to look OK but I want to get them right first time more!

Brilliant Lisa and thank you so much - I think this is just what I need. I've joined and am now trying to think of a suitable theme from Prompt 1. I fear pigs or Saari may not want to stay still too long. Maybe trees would be good. I do like trees!
