Of all the animals we have here at Eco-Gites of Lenault I think it is safe to say that the creatures with the least in the brain department has to be the turkeys. In fact, a friend and I joke that on a good day the turkeys share one brain cell and on a bad day they let her husband have it!!
These are some of our turkeys. Now I am not sure which one it was but one of the black ones disappeared a few days ago. I searched around in all it's likely haunts but it was no-where to be seen. Luckily however, the pigs had up-ended their water bowl so I went to the water butts to get some fresh supplies and what did I find in one of the water butts? Yup - a turkey!! Thank goodness the water level in this butt was very low so having somehow fallen in, the turkey was only knee deep in water. Any deeper and it would undoubtedly have drowned but as it was it simply looked up at me somewhat pathetically as though it was saying, "I'm a turkey - Get me out of here!"
I fished it out and it seemed no worse the wear for it's incarceration. I have no idea how it managed to get into a water butt about 1.25m high (they can't fly) but I have now put a turkey proof cover over the butts and will remember to extend my search much further when the next turkey goes AWOL!
Have you ever found an animal in a really ridiculous place? Or have you a daft turkey tale to tell?
No daft turkey tales to tell here, every time my Lovely Hubby says we should get turkeys to fatten up for Christmas I remind him that they WILL end up as pets as I will NOT allow him to murder birds for the festive season :-)
ReplyDeleteMy strangest, and also happiest bird in unusual place find, was when the fox had attacked our flock of chickens and I thought our cockerel, Caldwell II had died and been carried off defending his wives. I found him two days later hiding face first in a bucket wedged between our worms beds. He had survived two nights at minus temperatures badly wounded. He pulled through and lives to this day to defend his girls.
You never know what you're going to find or where when you have birds and animals.
