This is my blog, A Green and Rosie Life, which is all about helping you live life that bit greener without having to build an off-grid log cabin in the woods or knit your own nettle fibre undies! It's about helping you make simple changes that together will make a big difference to our beautiful world and make it a better place for our children.
I know - I wonder if she always ended up wearing grey. I'm so glad I don't have to wear all that clobber and do my hair like that every day - it would scare the pigs! She's an unknown ancestor but I suspect she never got her hands dirty!
Do you like the new look then, Paul?! Seriously though can you imagine having to get into that lot every day? I wonder how many overworked servants she had?
Very interesting photo. She looks like I imagine Queen Marie Antoinette would have looked. Wonder how they managed to go to the toilet with all that lot on?!
Thank you Cathy - so do I. I have emailed the picture and another one from the same period to various family members to see if they can shed any light on her.
Really interesting portrait. I looked at it for a few mins! I always wonder what their story is.
ReplyDeleteShe's an ancestor but I have no idea who. I am hoping some-one might be able to tell me at least the rough date this would have been painted.
DeleteI don't know who she is but her hair is exactly the same colour as her dress!

ReplyDeleteMaybe I am descended from French aristocracy! And as for going to the toilet I have no idea. Possibly with a servant in tow!
DeleteWow... That's quite a portrait! Imagine having to dress like that every day, it would take hours! :D
ReplyDeleteBut then she probably didn't have much else to occupy her day with!
DeleteBeautiful portrait. French? Mel #SilentSunday
ReplyDeleteUnlikely - more possibly English or Scottish although I think my Scottish ancestors at the time she was pointed were poor!
DeleteI hope you do find out more about this ancestor one day Rosie.

DeleteWhat a nice portrait. Always leaves me wondering the story behind the person though, seeing things like this.
ReplyDeleteIt is lovely isn't it and all the more special for me knowing I am related to her. Not that you'd catch me in a dress like that mind!
DeleteWhat an interesting picture and curious tale, hope you find some answers x #silentsunday
ReplyDeleteThank you Kirsty - I have a few family members looking at her to see if they know anything.
DeleteBeautiful portrait....Would be so interesting to find out more about who the lady was. x
ReplyDeleteI am hoping the Internet may help with my research!
DeleteSuch a stunning picture, I would love to wear those sort of dresses, so swishy but highly impractical i'm sure ;) #silentsunday
ReplyDeleteI actually think they would be really uncomfortable - all that waist pulling in and the weight of them.
DeleteWhat a fab picture to have of one of ancestors.
ReplyDeleteShe is rather wonderful isn't she?!
DeleteNice picture and I love the fact the wallpaper frames it :-)
ReplyDeleteHowever the wallpaper en masse is rather overpowering!
