Ben's Garden

This week for #HDYGG I am taking a week off although I am not sunning myself on a Greek island like one Annie some of us know.  In fact I am being super busy in the garden trying to keep on top of everything that needs doing at this time of year.  And this week I have added something new to my list ... "Help Ben, our younger son set up his own patch of garden".  So without further ado, it is over to Ben who is giving us the blog post this week.

Hi, I'm Ben and I have just started my own garden at Eco-Gites of Lenault and I am really excited to get it going.  So far I have already planted cabbages, purple sprouting broccoli, strawberries and lettuces.  I have put grass round them to try and stop some of the weeds and also reduce the need for watering (or so Mum says!).

My love of gardening started quite young - here I am with my brother Tom in our garden in England before we came to France ... however I have to say I have no idea what we are doing or whether we were supposed to be doing it or not!  We were probably trying to eat it!

Fast forward 11 years and here I am with my very own garden!

I'd love to have some ideas from you as to what I should plant in the rest of my garden.  I would prefer fruit of veg although edible flowers would be OK.  What do you think I should be growing?

For further great gardening posts head on over to the How Does Your Garden Grow linky which this week is being hosted by Gemma Garner.

  1. Runner beans are good fun Ben, nice to eat and pretty to look at, you would need to build some sort of support for them to climb up, bamboo wigwams are commonly used. Good luck and well done you (I really liked your blog post, will you be starting one of your own?). x JT

    1. Thank Claudia :). We cannot grow tomatoes outside here as they usually get blight ... but Mum has 60 tomato plants in her polytunnel so hopefully that will give us well over 600 tomatoes!

  3. It sounds like your patch will be full up in no time Ben. Great picture of you and your brother, it looks like your tucking into that lettuce straight from the pot! I like growing rubber beans, perhaps you could plant berries like blackcurrants and raspberries?

    1. Not sure I have room for berry bushes but I will be helping Mum to pick fruit from the fruit garden ... and eating lots of it!!

  4. Keep up the good work Ben! My daughter has just started at gardening club at school this week and despite the fact they spent an hour clearing weeds she loved it. We like to grow beans here and it's fun to see them growing up round the canes.

    1. I am keen to grow beans too. I had the same problem with weeds but luckily it only took me 1/2 an hour to clear them!

  5. That's a fab start Ben - how about some courgettes? Although they're quite prolific but you can make them into a chocolate cake too as well as veg, and that can't be bad can it :) Looking forward to seeing how your garden grows #hdygg

    1. Wellll, Stephanie, one little problem there - Believe it or not, I don't really like chocolate cake! But I have eaten Mum's courgette and chocolate cake and it was OK! BUT I do like courgettes :)

    2. Ha ha, that's a shocking admission!! But of the two I guess it's more healthy to like courgette than chocolate!

    1. That's a great idea, thank you! I think Mum has some sweet peas already growing that I can nick ... (Runner beans do seem a popular idea so I will definitely have to give them a go).

  7. Good Luck Ben! How exciting and special to have a space of your own. I love seeing younger gardener picture too. I hope that my little man will still have an interest in gardening when he is older.

  8. I'd definitely say tomatoes, my boys are both growing them, cherry and coeur de boeuf.
