Henry's Box - Just don't call it that.

Posted by Rosie

You may have seen that the picture I posted yesterday included, as well as the bendy boy, our cat Henry, curled up in his box ... only don't call it HIS box.  You see as soon as we have ever bought Henry his own basket, or specifically given him a box to sleep in, he has steadfastly refused to use in it.  However this wine box was just chucked down in front of the fire to be used for lightening it the following morning when Henry decided to requisition it.

It was quite funny watching him try his best to get in the box, that originally had just a large hole at the front. He tried this way and that but however he tried, he failed to get in.  In the end we gave in and tore open the box. This was the point when he gave un the filthiest of looks roughly translated as, "Why on earth did you do that (and I shall ignore the fact I couldn't get in as it was)?"  It must however have been a particularly good box as even after our unwelcome intervention he later decided it was worth another try.  That was a couple of weeks ago and it has been his favourite sleeping place ever since.

It wasn't the first box (or otherwise) that he has appropriated:

A very much younger Henry in another small box

I don't know if you ever put human characteristics onto your animals but we have had fun humanising Henry.  We reckon he would be a gentleman of independent means, never needing to work.  He would have a small swish flat somewhere fairly affluent and every day would go to his club where he would sit in the same chair and would expect his paper, probably The Times, to arrive without being asked for and to have been ironed to perfect flatness.  Likewise he would expect his brandy to be served in the same glass and at the same time every day without him having to ask for it.  Yes, I think he is more than likely a little bit OCD.  Maybe something like the cat in the middle of this paining by Eel Eye:

Henry?

How would you describe your pet in human terms, I'd love to hear. You could blog about it for the Animal Tales linky.

  1. They never want the purpose built box do they? Never. I promise not to tell Henry you told us about 'his' box.

    1. It was a risk blogging this but so far he still seems oblivious to the fact we sometimes call it "his" box!

  2. Fabulous! They really do sleep anywhere don't they? We always had to be careful going on holiday as Monster used to get in the suitcase and bury himself!

    1. Henry has never got into a suitcase but we have had one of the outdoor cats get in the car of departing gite guests several times and many years ago a friend accidentally took one of our cats all the way fro the farm the the local town in the car, not realising until she jumped out in the car park. Luckily she managed to catch her.

  3. This is so cute, especially love the photo where Henry is trying to fit in his little box. Boots hasn't been home again. I'm sure she's curled up in her "other home" again. I've learned to accept it now and don't feel so jilted anymore ;) #animaltales.

  4. Nothing like a good box to sleep in ... but (hehe) perhaps Henry needs it to be lined with velvet for his naps there in between visits to the gentlemen's club?

  5. My first home in the US was shared with two cats - they were awesome and so cute.

  6. That's such a cat thing to do! Our neighbour many years ago brought back a woven pizza dish from holiday for us. After she left the cat found it on the floor where it had been put while we saw our neighbour out and promptly sat on it! After that Mum decided it was the cat's new bed and due to the shape of it was known as Giles' satellite dish.

  8. Lovely post. We always referred to our old family dog Ollie as the 'Elder Statesman' complete with smoking jacket and cravat. #animaltales

  9. Lucas says - How weird!! The Mother's just posted for Ash about all his doggie friends, especially his old friend Ollie and how she used to say he was the old gentleman and Ash was the cheeky school boy. #animaltales

  10. This reminds me of Dotty so much! She loves boxes and bags and is always hiding in any that may be around. Lovely pictures x #AnimalTales

  11. Lol, Layla is like that too. We bought her a lovely soft, warm basket, with a blanket, and she WILL not sleep in it or go near it. She uses a tatty old cardboard box, with a piece of old jumper of mine, or she will sleep in the bottom of my wardrobe on my shoes. Cats are so weird aren't they!

    1. I have chucked one of Saari's blankets in the front porch to wash and both outdoor cats have snuggled up on it all day. I bet if I bought them a bed they'd ignore it!
