Update on a Thief

I first posted this blog way back in 2009 and it made me chuckle when I re-read it.  Saari has always been a terrible thief although in the early days she was particularly bad and would even raid the compost heap:

"Flippin' dog! I put her out for a constitutional last night and she didn't come back in. Where was she? Yep - in the veg patch. So, today I set off to find where she'd got in and it looks like there is one likely hole round the far side. She's one determined dog. I did try to block the gap but need to find something more suitable than the fallen branches I had to hand - plus I got a huge thorn in my knuckle for my troubles. Oh yes - when gardening later I found dog paw prints in the compost heap. Honestly!!

I found this information on a Siberian Husky website and as Saari is half Husky it makes sense:

"The nature of a well bred Siberian is cheerful, often mischievous, and energetic. Siberians that are properly bred and socialized love people and need human companionship to be happy. Their independent nature leads some to label them stupid but nothing could be farther from the truth! Siberians are problem solvers and accomplish amazing feats when they are determined to do something -- such as escaping their kennel or yard to do some exploring! Never, never underestimate a Siberian Husky’s intelligence and determination!"

Over the years since I wrote this post she has stolen all of the following and lots more besides:
  • 3/4 of a cake
  • Entire pats of butter
  • A large chuck of cheese (yesterday)
  • Any number of Henry's bowls of cat food
  • More revolting dead things on walks than I care to think about
  • Food off the bird table
  • Chicken stock as it was cooling
  • Biscuits that Firkin the cat was knocking off the table for her to scoff
  • She has also licked clean plates waiting to go in the dishwasher and is our patent BBQ cleaner!

It would seem as far as Saari is concerned that if something might be edible and she can reach it, she'll eat it.

Do you have a thieving dog? What is the worst thing they have stolen?

  1. Your post made me smile.:) I have a german short haired pointer that often drives me to distraction...but then you read a description of the breeds character and realise they are just doing what comes naturally...still extremely frustrating !! So pleased your hen turned up this morning safe and sound.

  2. Saari is currently sulking as I won't let her out unattended at the moment. She's refused her breakfast this morning in protest!!

  3. Our apples get stolen every year straight off the tree. Freki will stand on his hind legs and try to 'grab' a branch and looks very much like your Saari in the above shot trying to steal bird food. The funny thing is that the apples at the top of the tree get stolen by the parrots (we don't mind feeding the local bird-life) there is usually a stray apple or two between the upper and lower branches where the dogs can't reach and the parrots won't venture.

    1. Ha ha, that's really fun - for once it's the middleman (apple) who is the winner. We no longer have the bird table as Saari finally toppled it over and when I hung fat balls in the tree I found one of the cats trying to eat them ... so they are currently hanging on the washing line (the fat balls not the cats!)

    1. Oh yes, she's a character all right and saviour of the day too ... well night really as last night a stray cat was fighting with one of our cats and she saw it off very forcibly. Hopefully it won't be back again in any hurry.

  5. This made me laugh! So far Doc hasn't really "stolen" much. When he was younger, he stole and chew on a Christmas decor and a few small toys little T has left on the floor ;) #animaltales.

  7. Wow! Saari puts Tin Box Dog's food finding skills to shame and she's meant to be a tummy obsessed Labrador Retreiver! If anyone is eating TBD can always be found under the dining room table - particularly when the kids are having dinner! She's calmed down since she was a puppy though. The worst thing she did then was help herself to the icing on my dad's birthday cake :) #animaltales

    1. Naughty TBD. Apparently one layer of one of my childhood birthday cakes was stolen by the dog we had them. Mum yelled at him, he put it down in the stable yard where he was, she dusted it off and only told us AFTER we had eaten the cake!!

  8. We are getting a puppy in March. It will be the first time I have ever owned a dog so I am a little nervous, although very excited as well. Hopefully he won't be a robber pup!

  9. nope, the dog doesn't steal anything other than the cats food, however the cat has stolen chicken and dragged a string of sausages off the counter we were going to Braai

    1. Our cats are also thieves - no food is safe at Eco-Gites of Lenault and dear old Poppy even stole a croissant from the hand of one of our small gite guests!

  12. Saari cracks me up! :) Stella will pretty much steal anything to eat that she can get away with...the worst was a whole bar of dark chocolate (save for the 2 squares I'd eaten) one night that I'd forgotten to put back in the fridge. She hid most of the wrapper under a bookcase but I spotted a little foil in her bed and guessed what had happened. I rang the vets as soon as I realised but they said unless she'd eaten it within the last 10 minutes there was nothing they could do but that it was probable that as she hadn't got incredibly poorly already from it she'd got away with it. About the only time she has been medically fortunate!
